The Importance of Hiring the Right Interiors Photographer: A Q+A with Christopher Stark

Q: What makes an interior photograph “publishable” today—beyond just being beautiful?

CS: Editors are looking for photographs that tell the truth of the space — how it feels to be there — not just a perfect catalog view. That comes from strong editorial framing, restraint in styling, and light that feels intentional rather than over-produced. Beauty grabs your attention. It’s the story that make it memorable.

Q: What do editors notice first when they’re reviewing a shoot?

CS:  For editorial, I build a narrative: hero image, wide angles, and the smaller vignettes that reveal the designer’s decisions — material transitions, sight lines, and details that complete the story. Social is about immediacy and impact: verticals, tight crops, bolder moments. Sometimes that means a more graphic composition, closer details, or even a little motion.
